See Missouri v Holland (circa 1920) for just such a scenario. (For those who don't want to look it up, it was a case about a treaty with Canada in reference to migratory bird hunting. The end result was that the treaty changed how and when we can hunt.)
Second: If the "international treaty isn't about us", why in the world would we sign it?? It IS about us & our liberty. I like how Daiquiri gave different scenarios about what could happen should we ratify this treaty. That's exactly what would happen. Don't be so naive as to think it wouldn't & that this treaty is just about the poor, abused, third world kids. It's about power - global power. The kids are just a tool the treaty is using to get it.

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. -$100Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11373444438953580113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3648926369091231553.post-76341154119474104362009-02-13T11:41:00.000-07:002009-02-13T11:41:00.000-07:00Esther,After reading your comment, I can clearly s...Esther,

After reading your comment, I can clearly see your intelligence and compassion for "the least of these." I'm right there with you. I just do not believe that handing over my liberty or my ability to protect my own children is the right answer for addressing those problems.

I have to humbly disagree with this statement:
Please acknowledge that ratification of the CRC has no effect on domestic law. It isn’t a domestic policy. The “officials” you speak of would continue to be subject to the constitution of the United States of America, just as would be any other citizen.

The truth is, if this treaty is ratified, it will become international law and will trump domestic law and our constitution.

It is naive to believe we can just hand over our Liberty and trust the international community to not abuse it. Or to give them the right to have any say at all in how we fund our national defense. You are confident that that power will not be abused, how do you know?

Because we have been in the adoption process for the last two years, I've paid attention to the country of Liberia. Some of the most horrible crimes against children- little girls trading sex for food- has come from UN officials. I don't trust the UN.

My husband is a veteran, my grandfather and uncle are veterans, and I am sickened at the thought of handing over our sovereignty and liberty in especially something so precious as the right to parent and protect my babies.Becky Avellahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03111329550123400819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3648926369091231553.post-22253437189707350392009-02-13T08:57:00.000-07:002009-02-13T08:57:00.000-07:00I agree with you, Esther. This isn't about us or ...I agree with you, Esther. This isn't about us or homes like mine, and that's precisely the reason that it is neither necessary nor wise to open the door to international law dictating how we parent. We already have laws protecting children. Forced child marriage, child prostitution, etc. are already addressed by our laws.

If we ratify this lay, every one of us will be affected. At a bare minimum, we will be "registering" our children as they are born...presumably so that they can be kept track of by the "multinational panel of experts" that you refer to.

No thanks.

UNICEF might not be coming for me...now. And if they did right now? I would have a leg to stand on. If we ratify this thing...I'm simply at their mercy and their judgement about what's best for my kids.

Again, no thanks.

There are ways to reach out and "help our brothers and sisters in need" that do not put my personal liberties at risk.Daiquirihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06040557437955969295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3648926369091231553.post-86702204995713899492009-02-12T23:02:00.000-07:002009-02-12T23:02:00.000-07:00It is one of the saddest things in my life, a trag...It is one of the saddest things in my life, a tragedy that I struggle with every day, that middle class America so often can’t see far enough past its own front door to reach out a helping hand to those who need us most. I understand that you perceive the ratification of CRC to be an infringement on your rights as a parent. I would ask you to rise above that fear long enough to open your hearts to the people who are truly in need of protection.

Please acknowledge that ratification of the CRC has no effect on domestic law. It isn’t a domestic policy. The “officials” you speak of would continue to be subject to the constitution of the United States of America, just as would be any other citizen.

As I’m sure you’ve found in your research, the CRC indicates a commitment on the part of the federal government to protect children from human rights abuses, and compliance is monitored by report to a multinational panel of experts, the Committee on the Rights of the Child. UNICEF is not coming for you, or for me. UNICEF is asking governments to report on their progress in abolishing forced marriage, trafficking, child labor and all kinds of abuses of the world's most vulnerable population. I wish I could say these problems don’t exist in the United States, or that they would go away if we ignored them, but I don’t believe that they will. And it breaks my heart that people who are privileged to live in safe situations, whose children are safe, continue to perceive this effort on the part of UNICEF to be a threat to our way of life.

This international treaty isn’t about us. It isn’t about homes like yours, or even like mine. It’s about making the world a better place for kids. And I believe that the fact that the United States is alone among Western nations in refusing to sign it reflects poorly on our willingness to care for our brothers and sisters in need.Estherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00991864264278624988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3648926369091231553.post-23308283627112557352009-02-12T21:51:00.000-07:002009-02-12T21:51:00.000-07:00Great post.
